Getting to Cozumel

  Two miles north of San Miguel, close enough that you are at your hotel before the air conditioning in the taxi has done anything. Direct service runs from a short list of US and Canadian hubs, heavily seasonal and weighted to winter, with domestic connections through Mexico City. Arrivals are handled by an authorised shared-van service sold at a desk inside the terminal rather than by a kerbside taxi rank, and the fare is quoted by zone before you leave. The return leg is usually an ordinary island taxi booked through your hotel, so do not assume the company that brought you in will take you back. Confirm the arrangement when you arrive rather than on the morning of your flight.

  The cheaper and far better-connected way in, at the cost of a transfer day. Drive or shuttle roughly an hour south to Playa del Carmen, then take the passenger ferry. Budget three to four hours door to door and do not book the last ferry as your only option, because a cancelled sailing on a windy evening leaves you on the wrong side of the channel with your dive gear.

  The island's everyday link to the mainland. Ultramar and Winjet run catamarans between Playa del Carmen's Muelle Fiscal and the Cozumel terminal beside the main square, crossing in roughly 30 to 45 minutes, with combined departures at something close to hourly through the day and a thinner service early and late. Foot passengers and luggage only. Buy at the counter or online, and check the day's sailings in winter, when a norte can suspend them at short notice.

• Punta Langosta cruise pier

  The only pier actually in San Miguel, on the malecón at the south edge of downtown. A footbridge drops you straight into town, which makes it the best berth on the island for anyone who wants to walk rather than book. If your ship is here, the main square, the ferry terminal and the shops a few blocks inland are all on foot.

• International Pier (Muelle Internacional)

  Three miles south of downtown, next door to Puerta Maya and sharing the same stretch of coast road. Taxis queue at the gate on a fixed zone fare into town. Several of the big beach clubs are a short ride further south, which is why the pier and the beach-club day pass are so often sold as one product.

  3.5 mi

  Carnival-operated and the busiest berth on the island, a few hundred metres south of the International Pier. The terminal itself is a large shopping and restaurant complex, so it is entirely possible to spend a call here without seeing Cozumel at all. Taxis and tour meeting points are outside the retail exit, past the last shop.

• Calica vehicle ferry (Punta Venado)

  The only way to bring a car to the island. A vehicle ferry runs from Calica, south of Playa del Carmen, to Cozumel's cargo terminal on a limited daily schedule aimed at freight and residents rather than visitors. Crossing time is considerably longer than the passenger boat. Almost nobody on a week's holiday needs it: renting on the island is simpler and usually cheaper than shipping a mainland rental across.
